Basic R&D

The Obama administration last week provided $62 million as a boost efforts to make solar power truly competitive with coal. The money is going to a mix of start-ups and big old-line tech companies -- many in California -- that are working on some potentially game-changing technology.

Just as Al Gore and the Democrats' investment of public money into tech R&D in the late 70's and 80's gave us the internet and a tech boom led by the the United States, a similar commitment here would not only save the environment but put America at the forefront of the next boom, green technology. The GOP and their big oil and coal cronies will do all they can to stop it, but just as with most things they're against, it will turn out good for America.

  1. Basic R&D only works with government backing. It's too expensive and too risky to do entirely in the private sector. Most people have no clue that is the case.
