Safe Offshore Drilling

In the wake of the catastrophic oil spill in the gulf Republicans continue to push for offshore drilling, claiming it's safe and will reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

I have no idea if there's such a thing as safe offshore drilling or not. But it's painfully clear that when operating under Republican regulatory rules, it's a catastrophic failure. So perhaps they are correct when they say it's possible, but we'll have to get rid of their public policy to find out.

  1. Whether or not it can be safe as far as not killing people who work on the rigs and not spilling petroleum and its products into the ocean, it will never be safe as far as the effects of burning fossil fuels on the atmosphere and the climate. We are already at least near the tipping point; if we don't stop adding carbon to the atmosphere soon, there will be no turning back.

  2. Of course off shore drilling will reduce dependency on foreign oil! Out of the thousands of oil rigs the US owns around the world, one has a catastrophe and we just shut it all down? It was a tragedy yes, but coming from a company who has safety standards no greater than those of teenage pyromaniacs, can we really say that ALL rigs are ticking time bombs ready to blow and destroy our environment?! Something needs to be done about BP. period. But for the most part, oil drilling has only gotten safer, smarter, and cleaner. Aside from all that, you will only give the power of the worlds most valued and widely used resource in the hands of foreign countries alone. We will ALWAYS need oil. the amount of intake is what we can change. I agree with alternative uses of energy, but not the abandonment of oil. We have learned to use less of it and in a cleaner fashion as time has gone on and we need to continue to make improvements. Or we could just let it sit under the surface, leaving all of its potential to waste.

So let's keep doing it. But like I said, in order to make it safe we need to make sure we don't operate under GOP regulatory policy.
