On the O’Reilly Factor last night Sarah Palin called America a Christian nation and said “I think we should keep this clean, keep it simple, go back to what our founders and our founding documents meant. They’re quite clear that we would create law based on the God of the Bible and the 10 commandments, it’s pretty simple.”
The founding fathers were mostly agnostic and their "documents" showed deep skepticism if not openly hostility toward the views of Jesus-in-government-pimps like Sarah Palin. Thomas Jefferson, in his famous wall of separation letter advocated fiercely for what he called "a wall of separation between church and state." This letter led to the the Establishment Clause of the first amendment and the famous phrase we use today. Similarly, James Madison, the father of the constitution, fills the archives with his own documents detailing his intention to keep religion away from government.
If Sarah Palin wants to talk about the founding fathers without sounding like a fool she should learn some history first. And if she wants to live in a theocracy she should move to Iran.

ReplyDeleteMore good stuff on the subject from both these guys can be found in the federalist papers. But I doubt Palin even knows what those "documents" are.
ReplyDeleteJefferson never called himself a Christian. He actually sort of mocked Christianity a lot.
